thankyou everyone - especially John & Juultje for setting this up.Never thought a few months ago I would be putting this message on here standing at Singapore airport en-route to Australia where I now have another 3 weeks of racing with Jody's dad - but this time it's motorbikes.Glad they all arrived OK. Jody phoned me from Dakar, but have left him in his sisters hands for 3 weeks when he gets home. Not sure how impressed he'll be with that. He's had the chance of a lifetime for someone his age and look forward to hearing all about it when I get home. This site has been an enormous help to many these last couple of weeks, thankyou

Ivar and Quin finished their rally 25th in this stage and 30th overall. Unfortunately unable to recover from that broken diff. They spent a total of 62 hours, 27 minutes and 9 seconds on stage. --------------------------------------------------------------------------Alain LePlat and Pascal Ferrand came 46th in this stage, 43rd overall. They spent a total of 67 hours, 28 min and 13 sec. on stage, and have 37 minutes penalty time.-------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nick and Alec have finished at 12:54, as 27th in this stage. They are now 80th overall, thus managing to climb in the overall standings right till the last stage. They spent 83 hrs, 29 mins and 15 Sec. on stage and got 5hrs and 55 mins. penalty.--------------------------------------------------------------------------These are the times they spent on stage. Who knows how much time they actually spent in total in their car! I think they all deserve a good stretch and a hot bath after that! Best Bowler in the rally this year is Gibon, who came 18th overall. Well done to all who made it. I counted about 70 withdrawals with the cars on the withdrawals page. Only 4 withdrawals after stage 8, which is incredible. Only the T4 truck to finish the stage now. And then... That's it for Dakar 2007, and all that remains to be done is the journey back home, and start planning for next year! Juultje

Ivar and Quin finished their Dakar 2007 at 12:28, The others are still on 'stage'. The stage however is so small that they are all pretty much on top of each other on Iri track. The support crew is still in Dakar. It took them over 2 hours yesterday to get through the traffic to where they were meant to be. I phoned John, but who would want to disturb a man when he's having his first proper shower in 2 weeks!? Not long now and they will all be home. Juultje

Description of the internet about the Hotel in Dakar, if they are at the Merridian: "a decent hotel considering you are in Africa. The hotel is clean and the rooms are equipped with cable internet. No sign of insects in my room. The sink and toilet would not drain. The two restaurants are decent and the bar is good. Do not drink the water or consume ice. Bring bottled water. The mosquitoes were very bad ... take your Doxy. Verizon's world-wide cell works here."

Thanks for that Emily, I think they should listen to feedback from privateers. I had been looking at the withdrawals as well. Last year almost 60% of all cars did not make it, with many having to withdraw in the latter stages of the rally as well. The rally should be about skills in navigation and off road driving. It is now just past 2 pm, Ivar and Quin seem to be past the finish line. They seemed to have stopped at the finish for a bit. Nick will have crossed the line in the last few minutes, so maybe they want to drive to Dakar together. Nick has done really well. Is he seriously only 19? What an age to have your first Dakar under your belt! LePlat has continued after the finish and is on his way to Dakar. the T4 truck is near the 156 km mark. It is now a race between the service team on a different road, and the cars to see who get's to Dakar first. I hope the service team manage to get there first because I'm sure Ivar and Quin would prefer that! After finishing this stage follows the stage tomorrow around Lac Rose. Here is the description: STAGE 15 - 21/01/2007 Dakar > Dakar Connection: 36 km | Special: 16 km | Connection: 41 km Total: 93 km Salt water and champagne The possibility to grasp a handful of seconds, or maybe even advance one or two places – this makes up the challenge (and excitement!) of the final stage. But although this last timed stage gives everyone a chance to become the hero of the day, the most significant aspect of the Rose Lake special is actually something else. Indeed, it marks the end of the great adventure started in Lisbon. And the obstacles overcome along the way merit at least a photo shoot.

Hi all. Juultje following on from Johns comment about week 2, Quin said pretty much the same thing last night, that it has not been nearly as tough as before and if you look on the withdrawl list, there are hardly any people dropping out after stage 8 which is very unusual. Quin has also been disappointed as if it had been more difficult they would have fared better against the fast cars. This Dakar has been more about speed (the cars) than skill (the drivers and navigators). A bit of feedback to the organisers won't do any harm...lets hear it for the privateers. Emily

All the cars past CP1. LePlat and Ivar and Quin near 156 Km mark. The distance between the cars is staying very much the same, which may confirm that it is hard to pass each other on this stage. the truck 565 is heading for CP1. The support is about half way to Dakar. They still have quite a long way to go by the looks of it. John has been very impressed by the guys on his team during this rally. Paul, Iain and Jody were mentioned a lot. I think this means they must have coped really well with all the pressures of being in the Dakar. Because despite the Timbuctu stage being cancelled, it is still the hardest rally in the world. Slowly little stories of heroism in the desert are coming through. At this stage of the rally I must say I'm just looking forward to having John home again, getting a cuddle, and then hearing all the stories of this year's Dakar Rally. Juultje

Another early start it seems. They will be feeling those potholes well in their defender I am sure! The cars have all just started the stage, while the T4 truck is at the starting line. Today's stage seems to be on what is indicated as a raod on my map. Not a good road, but a road never the less. This may mean it will be a lot harder for Ivar and Quin to pass others. we'll have to wait and see. Let's hope people listen to their sentinels, because I'm sure Ivar and Quin are keen to get to Dakar! The T5 support vehicules are taking the main road to Darak via Kaolack. I heard a bit from John last night when he went to bed at 11 PM. He was fine and looking forward to a good shower. I'm not sure which hotel they will be staying in, but it will be more luxurious than anything they have had over the past 2 weeks. They may even be able to use their shaving equipment! Juultje

John just phoned. They have arrived in Tambacounda about 2 hours ago, as iri track suggested. They have set up for the cars coming in. He said it is a strange rally this year. The second week should have been at least as tough as the first week, like last year. But instead they are ready two hours before the cars arrive, the cars have not much wrong with them and then they can go to bed, compared to 3 days of not sleeping at all in a row last year this is a bit disappointing. He hopes to see more action in week two next year. He can't believe tomorrow is the end of his trip! LePlat is near the bivouac, Ivar at finish line, Nick about 20 or 30 km to go and the T4 has just past CP1. Juultje

The truck is only about 15 km behind Ivar and Nick. The Support Trucks are taking the main road to Tambacounda via places called Goudiri and Bala, which is where we can find the 585. Juultje

Well, I nearly fell off my chair last night, thank God I got the Tivo working in time. Quin called earlier to explain that he hadn't been happy with the car before they started so checked at the start of the stage, couldn't find anything (he'd heard some rattling) and carried on. Then they had transmission problems, and the diff blew. So they just had to wait for the T4. Ivar was NOT happy etc. etc. Thankfully they made it to the end but will start at the back "eating dust" to quote Ivar. They just have to get a good time today so lets hope there are places to overtake and people are not ignoring the sentinels. Bad luck on the bikes, two of the top riders out. I swear Marc Coma does not read his roadbook. Three more days....Emily

Results for today. I would like to know what happend on the way for Ivar and Quin. They finished the stage in 104th place today, taking them from 24th overall yesterday to 30th overall today. Still a great achievement! Emily, any more news? LePlat became 62nd this stage making him 46th overall and Nick was 101st on the stage, making him 81st. Well done guys, keep up the good work! The T4 truck, number 565, has been doing well, staying in 53rd place, and being 53rd on the stage, as well as overall. AS far as I can tell the following are left: 135 out of the 264 motorbikes that started, 109 cars out of the 189 cars that started, and 58 out of the 85 trucks that started. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tomorrow they will cross the border into Senegal. "Senegal brings the euphoria of deliverance for those competitors who reach it. It’s also a lesson in humility and patience. You mustn’t allow the relief at having overcome the principal obstacles to make you lower your guard. Amongst the leaders, reversals of situation are still possible, right up till the end of the 14th stage, where the victors in the various classes will be declared. The day at Lac Rose will be devoted to celebration and spectacle." STAGE 13 - 19/01/2007 Kayes > Tambacounda Connection: 180 km | Special: 260 km | Connection: 18 km Total: 458 km Skittering along Expert skidders are going to have the times of their lives here! On these tracks over laterite, the aim of the game is all about controlling your machine. The team-work between drivers and navigators is also one of the big issues today. To make it to Tambakunda, you’ll also need to think about slowing down and finding the right pace to thread between the baobabs.

He's done this on & off for years, since before Jody was born. Is it any wonder Jody is where he is today? If you want a change from off road vehicles check out www.trans-pacifictrophy.com.   Looks like Ivar and Quin are fine. They are moving anyway. CP1 results: Alain LePlat through CP1 at 14:02, Nick at 14:57 and Ivar at 15:10. The T4 truck 565 is getting there, and is on top of CP1 on iritrack. The rest of the support team has arrived at Kayes. Alain seems to have finished, no time available yet. He will be at the start of the 117KM connection to get the the bivouac. In the last days of the rally they have to be careful in these stages, as they are in more populated areas, and they are more tired themselves. Good luck to them all, and off course to the support team, who will be meeting up with Andy (a different one) at the bivouac, and then set everything up for the cars to start arriving back. Let's see if we get any news about how much they will have to do tonight... Juultje

Hi Andy, good to see you back, and hello Steve, nice to see you on the forum as well. I heard your presentation and photo's at the BAJA presentation were fantastic. You obviously know your stuff! I would love to see it for myself some time. As would John I imagine! John has both our cameras, so I'm sure he will have some pictures, because I took come in Lisbon. We'll see how much time he has had himself for pictures when he comes back next week... When would you need them for?--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Update on iritrack. The support trucks are nearing Kayes. Ivar and Quinn seem to be in running behind at about 110 km into the stage. They are behind Alain and Nick, with Alain being around the 200 km mark. I have not chequed their movements since this morning as I was working, so they might be driving again. If not, they are about to meet up with the 565 support truck which is right behind them. Hope it all gets sorted. Emily, are you ok? Juultje

They are all on their way again, except the 565 truck, which I'm sure will be leaving soon. They are all on the connection to the stage. Except the 585 truck. Looking at iri track and the map it seems that all the T5 service trucks, with ALL the service crew, are taking the road from Ayoun to Kayes which goes via Nioro and Sandare. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Message from a proud wife: for all wives and girlfriends who feel a bit neglected, it's true, they hardly have signal at all during this rally, and I doubt they have time and energy to remember birthdays etc. They are on the toughest off road rally in the world, so really, we should not expect too much from them on the home front until they get back again. And be proud of them, because they are doing something many man want to do, but only very few have the skills and stamina needed to do it! Juultje

Just had a text from Jody (110 defender support). They are just leaving to go to Kayes. All OK, but says he's just received several messages from the last couple of days all in one go now he has a signal again, so if anyone is thinking their husbands/sons/boyfriends are ignoring them, don't be too hasty complaining! They don't have too far to Dakar now.

Iain and Paul are indeed together on the truck driven by John. Because it is a support truck it does not have satelite connection, so we can not see them on iri track on the dakar website. However, you can see the 585, which is always near John's truck. So you can always know roughly where Ian and Paul are too. For how to use iritrack you can go back to the reply to message 20-something. Anyway, I received a joky text from John today about how to use a vaccuum cleaner. They have obviously had a strange day today and they seem more rested. A second text read; "Just off to bed after an easy day. All is well. A very long drive through a forest in sand tomorrow. One of my favourites!"

In response to the message below regarding Iain Peever... he is not listed as being in either of the two trucks. vist www.dakar.com and look at list of entrants under 2007 edition. Hope this helps.

Please thank John for setting this up. They are near the end now.So proud of them all. Sure they are all waiting for a decent bed and bath. And I'm another one who has had to endure the snooker waiting to watch the Dakar on Eurosport.

While the 858 truck and service crew are having a wel deserved rest in Nema Ivar and Quin are shooting ahead. They are probably looking forward to some sleep as well. They past CP1 at 11:16 and CP2 at 12:12. Le Plat past CP1 at 11:47 and Nick at 11:16. LePlat is not far off CP2. The 565 truck is about 1/3 of the way there to the finish, which means it is still on its way to CP1. No further news. Juultje

Standings for Ivar and Quin, overall 25th! Yesterday's stage 22nd! Well done! For LePlat, Overall 26th and yesterday's stage 57th. I could not find Nick and Alec in the standings, but I know they broke down and a truck went to get them last night. Their car was fixed and they are on the move today heading for the start of the stage. So is the 565 truck. They must be soooo tired! Today's stage is to replace the stage to Timbuktu (Don't know how to spell that in English!) There is not much information on the site about is, but judging by 'today's stage' under 'live' on the Dakar site it is a mixture of dunes and something more solid. My computer doesn't show the legend! The 585 has stayed put, and I hope they are all getting a good sleep tonight. Juultje

Just a small word to say how much the help and suport that people showed, ment to us in our hour of need, as you can imagine the decision to turn around that morning was a very hard one, but we knew that if we went into the desert with an engine making noises like that one did, we may end up loosing the car in the desert, so with heavy hearts we turned around and headed north, we took the spark plug out and the injector lead off so as to take the pressure off the bad piston, then crawled to the 500k to Agadir all the time getting info off people from home about people to meet who could help us,we stoped the night in Agadir then got going at 3,30 am heading for Casablanca where we thought we could get a boat but there were no boats to Europe from there by this time the engine is not looking good we had traveld 1100k and still had 350k more to get to the port in Tanger, at this point a car transporter drove past us so we very enthusiasticly waved him down and barterd a ride to the port, by the time it was dark we were in spain, then it was a short drive to a contact in san pedro were the car was put in a locked garage and given a loving hug for getting us that far with a big end gone, all in all it was a very testing time for both of us, but with alot of help from our friends on this site who pulled all the stops out to get us home safe, we made it back, THANK YOU SO MUCH

I hope John was ahead of the 585 today to ensure Ian and Quin could have a well deserved rest upon arrival. still no word on Nick. He is not listed as a withdrawal, but he has also not moved away from the startline yet. The T4 (565) has not been moving a lot. I think I have just seen it move a bit, so they must still be on their way. They may have been experiencing some difficulties with the sand.   Hi Amanda. Yes, we all need a break from this some times. It seems everyone is having a break today! I guess I am just lucky because I haven't got many meetings today. They are all doing well. I have been updating John by text, but no reply so I do not know if he is receiving them. According to iritrack Nick is still in last nights bivouac, which is worrying. I am really hoping iri track is wrong. The truck is at 123 km, Ivar well on the way to CP2, past the 322 point. LePlat doing fine too. Chris is heading to Nema. I think they must have left extremely early this morning, and they are going to be there around the same time as Ivar. The 585 and other support trucks look to be on a road. If they arrive at the same time as Ivar they may not get a chance to phone. That is, if they even have signal in the first place. How are Ian and Rob? Juultje

I've been neglecting everything else and I'm sure Chris will wonder what I've been doing whilst he has been 'working away'. Chris briefly called this morning to find out if everyone came off stage yesterday and their positions but I could not see the truck in the overall standings only that he came off stage this morning at 4.00am. I've since been in meetings all day so am only now catching up with events.

The service team were heading in funny directions, and as it is hard to see where they are heading I was trying to find a map. I have now found another way of seeing where they are going! (Although it is easier now, because they are now on the connection route to tomorrow's stage). If in future it is unclear where they are heading again there is always car number 421. They went out in stage 4, went through a similar process as Ian and Rob, but decided to stay and go on to Dakar following the service route. They joined up with the service team yesterday and are now ahead of our crew. So a good way to see where they are going. Ivar and Quin through CP 1, but no time available yet. Nick and Alec still seem to be at the bivouac. Wonder what is happening there. Juultje

However, Nick and Alec still seem to be at the bivouac. Hope they are ok, and I hope iritrack is not working properly. I can also still see the 585.   STAGE 8 - 14/01/2007 Atâr > Tichit Connection: 35 km | Special: 589 km | Connection: 2 km Total: 626 km En route for the oasis This special has several facets. The course is quite well-marked, with stony tracks at the beginning of the course; then the enthusiasts will be entitled to a dose of sand in the middle of their day. Patience will be the drivers’ best ally for finding the oasis: the final track has no hidden traps, just so long as you keep your eyes peeled. The panorama that awaits the competitors is more than worth it. Backup vehicles are not allowed in Tichit.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- STAGE 9 - 15/01/2007 Tichit > Néma Connection: 0 km | Special: 494 km | Connection: 3 km Total: 497 km Searching for the route This big chunk of desert may seen hard to swallow. Here we are on one of the great classics of the Dakar, revisited and improved for the occasion. Landmarks are extremely few and far between – the finest navigators are going to have their say. For the less inspired, Plan B involves picking the right tyre-tracks to follow. Reaching Nema in daylight is a victory in itself, for after nightfall, everything seems to take twice as long. ----------------------------------------------------Good luck Ivar and Quin, Nick and Alec and also to Alain LePlat and Pascal Ferrand.

Subject: FROM IAN PEEVER (Who I previously called Iain, sorry...)
A quick summary of the game so far by Ian Peever (sent to Juultje on her mobile by John Goldie). "My first thoughts after arriving in Lisbon and meeting my co-pilotes for the T5 6x6 Paul Mansfield - very experienced Landrover mechanic and always making fun. Great, so I should get on fine then! Our driver is John Goldie - Done the Dakar before and various other Rally Raids so lots of experience. Great stuff. A good team. What could possibly go wrong? Where do I start? After arriving in Africa I think we found John's sense of humour. A very intelligent man. A teacher by profession and years of experience driving in Africa. So WHY does he drive through SAND STORMS with the WINDOW DOWN?!?!?Even with my wit and humour I find it difficult to keep up with Paul, a master of quick fire wit and one-liners. We have been nick-named the chuckle brothers! I just want to thank my wife for understanding how much this rally means to me and I love u loads."

Hello everyone. I'm back again after a quite relaxing 2 days without any iri track. However, I missed it as well so thank you very much Andy and Amanda for your updates! They were very much appreciated. I'm going to put one or two messages on right now. Firstly, I spoke to John on Friday evening (the 12th). We worked out then that we could follow the 585 truck and know where the rest of the support truck was, because they all tend to stick together. He mentioned that I should mention this to 'Jody's mum', so that is you Angela. Glad you had worked it out as well! For the first time I am not just following other people's husbands and boyfriends, I can actually have an idea where John is too now! Great!!! I hope they will leave it on! John said they were just having a bit of bear and a good laugh. They had been given the night off. A quick phone call on Saturday pointed out just how bad their signal was, and that they were back to being very busy, but still having a good time. John worked throughout the night before the rally to get this forum and website up and running, and he was very pleased to see it used so much. He said he was getting on well with everyone, and all was well. Note to EMILY: Really good to see you again, and to hear they are doing so incredibly well! Do you know how Ben, Adam and Toby are? I do not know if they are staying with the 585 truck as well like the other T5's or if they are somewhere else? Hope Quin feels better soon and has a happy and successful continuation of your honeymoon! Juultje

Hi There, Chris Hammond (585) just called on sat phone. All T5 assistance(truck, 110 and 585) together in the middle of desert camped and eaten ready for bed. Good job we went shopping in Lisbon and loaded 585 with loads of provisions as requested. John Goldie also had stuff that self heated so everyone is full and ready for sleep. They start again tomorrow at 5.00am and head for Nema and Biv tomommow. Race vehicles have had marathon stage today with no service so no biv to get them together today. More contact tomorrow.

Jody(110 defender - not on Iritrak) phoned approx.8pm.They have set up camp for tonight. Can see where they are by truck no.585 on Iritrak. The Bowler ones all together about to do dinner!!Backup vehicles not allowed in Tichit. They've camped in the sand heading straight to Nema.Jody has had a day or so feeling pretty sick by the sounds of it but it wasn't unexpected was it? Someone had the sense to make him go to the medical tent to get different tablets and said he feels much better today.I think the last few days have been tough for them all. However bad they feel I'm sure none will give up now.But don't you just sit here feeling helpless? Waiting to see the next message or tracking point.

I'm so excited and proud. Quin and Ivar have done incredibly well on what looks like the most difficult stage yet, Eurosport reporting only 9 cars in at 6.30pm. Quin is now full of cold and feeling quite miserable but still his co-driving skills have got them through in 14th and beating Jutta Kleinschmidt home. A very long day for all but thankfully not another 600km stage tomorrow...well it's almost 500km. And they don't start until 9.15. Lets hope there are some T5's there to check the cars over - they will be working late tonight! Good Luck for tomorrow guys. And not forgetting Nick and Alex - go on guys!!

Morning all.I should think Ian and Robs "special stage" up to Tangiers would have been .... well special to say the least.Stage 8 is underway with 8 Bowler Wildcats leaving the start within 10 mins of each other.Ivar the 1st on stage and Nick Tollefsen 10 mins behind him Alain Leplat just before Nick.Todays timed selective is 589kms and will not be a gentle Sunday drive with a mix of terrain including dunes. The T4 truck 565 is shown as on stage aswell. My only point of reference for all this is the Dakar website so i hope it's up to date.

Just a short update on Rob and Ians journey home,it was nearly as exciting as the Dakar! The highlight was flagging down an empty car transporter, negotiating terms with the driver ,who did`nt speak english.(money talks)They were then loaded on the top, they then traveled in the Bowler (there was no room in the lorry cab)at 70 mph to Tanger!!!At least they had a good view at that height!

Hi Steve Rees, Just a short note to thank you for the super video that was shown last night at the British off road championship dinner. I think it bought a proud tear to the eyes of all of us who are involved in the guy's Dakar adventures. To those now at Atar, I hear you were having a good evening last night - with beer and banter mentioned! Good for you - you absolutely deserve it after all the hard work that has been done to date and the unknown that lies ahead - well done, keep up the good work! Ian, Rob and families, Sterling job by all! What can I say?!? You are all now back together and safe at home - enjoy! P.S. When can we discuss the next adventure????? P.P.S. Sorry Timi and Claire - I was only joking - No, really!!! (hee, hee)

Ivar past CP1 at 12:25, LePlat at 13:08. Nick seems to have past it, but no time available yet. The 565 is on its way trondeling along I think. The 585 is now vearing to the west of the stage. If you go to 'The Day's Route' under 'live' on the Dakar Website, and choose today's stage you will find the stage pasted onto a proper map in the background. ( http://www.dakar.com/2007/DAK/LIVE/us/700/r7_5-parcours.html )On this you can see the Road the 585 must be on, which has crossed the stage, where they have probably waited to see all the bowlers pass, make sure they are ok, and they are now heading on that road towards Atar. On this map you can also see the tar road the organisation is talking about taking near CP2, also towards Atar. They will be using their ski goggles today with that wind! Juultje

Do you see what I see on iri track!!! I can still see the 585. They have not taken iri track off! That means we can have a rough idea where the T5's are!!! They are not far from the stage actually, slightly to the east! I hope they keep it on! That is the only way and the first time I have been able to get some idea of their whereabouts as well. Ivar is nearing CP1. The others seem to be doing fine. ANDY: Glad to know Richard and Kane are ok too and that they have been in touch with Ian and Rob. It is always a bit worrying when cars are left behind with their drivers. Luckely they did make it to the bivouac. I am very unclear about what happened to their car and why they had to stop. I guess we might find out later. As long as they are all safe, which they are. Great!

According to the race marshals present at CP2 (km 439), a strong sandstorm is blowing on the last kilometers of today’s special stage. As helicopters cannot fly in such weather conditions, the race’s management has decided – due to safety concerns – to remove the last 134 km of the special stage, which will therefore stop at km 407.6.   The route today: Good luck guys! STAGE 7 - 12/01/2007 Zouérat > Atâr Connection: 4 km | Special: 542 km | Connection: 34 km Total: 580 km Keeping on top A particularly full day’s programme, over 600 kilometres. No-one is likely to be left unmoved by this series of tracks, off-road sections, and dunes. This is where you find out just what “crossing the erg” means. And here too, the hierarchy can be thrown radically into disorder. After six days of racing, those who haven’t managed to avoid problems begin to feel the fatigue. Now, those moments of tiredness can cost you dear. Everybody’s going to be glad of the much-needed rest day.

Thanks Andy. Your comment was spot on! Yes we are two bowlers down, but there are still three in the competition. They seem to have taken off for the 542 km long stage today. It is going to be a tough day yet again. And there is still everyone on the service crew, who will need our support. Looking at the tv, and reading what is happening it is hard to get news of the support crew. It is almost as if they do not excist. However, they do exist, many of them, and they are working at least as hard as those racing, covering the same distances and then mechanicing through the night. Chris being out is a real shame, but by the looks of it they will still be driving to Dakar as a T5 support truck. This means they are not racing, but they are still around to be supported. The forum will also help them know where their bowlers are, because this forum is a lot easier to open on a mobile phone than iritrack! Even though the guys cannot update the forum except through us at the moment, simply because they are far too busy to get the actual computer out, they can see these messages on their mobiles. So keep up the good work. There are still people rallying out there!!! Juultje

Sorry to hear that Chris and co are out,but what a fantatic experience they have all had. Watching Eurosport at Claires most nights,to see the Atlas mountains, and the deserts they have driven through, has been great.Even to see the bivouac, decorated out,and the drivers sitting cross legged on the carpets, eating their meal, has all been exciting. Good luck to everyone left in ,and their familys,(who worry!!) We will keep reading the forum,it has been a great way to keep up with things.

Hi Guys, Chris called briefly on the sat phone - They are out too!!!! The front shocks have let them down again!!! We knew that they were taking a straight route slowly from the start for the biv but in reality they did not start at passage control - This puts them out of the rally. Nothing to say other than it's been a s**t day for all. My mobile has now shut down - probably due to over-time on air today. Tomorrow evening I go to the British championship awards dinner to collect Ian's and Chris's award for the British Hillrally Championship - I will be very proud to be associated with such fine and lovely gentlemen - A true credit to British motorsport - they did such a good job and I feel the best is yet to come! Bring on the 2007 British season.

Subject: Rob and Ian
Just spoken to Rob. They have arrived in Agadir. They have met the man they were meant to be meeting and now know there is no boats to Europe from there. They also know there is a landrover dealer and mechanic of some sort in the area. I phoned them because the Dutch guys phoned me to ask for their number so that they could find them and the same Moroccan guy who is with Ian and Rob and the moment. The Dutch have a Dessert Warrior at the moment, but were in a bowler last year. I hope they will find support in each other. These Dutch are great off roaders and very good mechanics. They did the Dakar last year in a second hand bowler that they did up completely themselves with their team, and they changed in into a diesel while they were at it. They know bowlers very very well! They are currently stuck with a broken 'turbo' on their desert warrior. They are being towed by Erwin, who is their media man. Erwin is in a Nissan. He has been towing them all the way from CP2 Stage 4. He went there looking for them in the dark, with a new turbo. Eventually found them the next day. Mounted the new turbo, which broke as well! As I said earlier on this forum, they are planning to fix their cars and drive them to Atar or otherwise Dakar. They have mentioned it is hard to organise things today because it is actually a national holiday in Morocco. I think they are a good bunch to be stuck with though, and they may well be of use to each other. Juultje

Iri track is such a wonderful tool when it works. I just wish John's truck had iritrack as well! Anyway, LePlat is in the lead, with Ivar passing CP1 about 7 minutes behind him. Both past CP1 around 16:00. Nick past CP1 at 16:36, about half an hour behind his father. The trucks: John Walker is doing ok. He is near the 131 km point. The 585 with Chris H and James however is moving painfully slow. They are still an estimated 40 km off the start, on the wrong side of the start. I hope they make it! They are making it more exciting than I can bare today. No more telephone contact possible. I think all we can do is try to relax for a bit knowing that Ian is ok and make a cuppa. Juultje

So, now that we can not do anything for a while anyway, let's not forget the others. Iritrack shows LePlat and Nick Tollefson past the 86 km point. Ivar is a bit before it still. As for the trucks (it is easy to see them all at the same time now)John Walker in the 565 is near the start of the stage, while the 585 is a while behind and still has a bit to go before reaching the stage. It is such a long liaison though! luckely only 8 or 9 km to go to bivouac once they have finished the special. Good luck to them all!

The Dutch guys they might meet have their own site, all in Dutch though: www.dakar2007.nl. "Hi Ro, Ian has made contact with this guy and will contact him when he gets to Agadir. He is already helping the Dutch team that retired on stage 4. Last year the Dutch team (Raoul and John Pierre Jacobs) were in the Bowler spirit team and raced a Bowler alongside Chris. They would also help if required as their Bowler knowledge is very comprehensive."

This means they have the number of a trustworthy local resident. They also have the number of the Dutch crew that was out in stage 4 who are heading to Agadir to fix their car. For Ian and Rob it can still go either way. Again, there is not much we can do from here but keeping our fingers crossed and jumping into action only when called upon. We can use this forum to ensure home support happends in a coordinated way, just like Harold and Rosemary Pugh did.   Ian and Rob are limping a bit at the moment. They have managed to get the car to drive. They are heading for Agadir, where they expect to arrive in 3 to 4 hours. They have with them the number of a person from Agadir called Mohamed. He has done the Dakar Rally in 1997 I believe, and currently lives in The Netherlands. He speaks English and has friends in Agadir. He helped last night trying to find parts as well! The Dutch crew who were out at stage 4 (the brothers Jacobs and Jacobs nr.421) are on their way to Mohamed's friend, who will help them fix their car and join up with the rally at the rest day in Atar. The other option for Ian and Rob is the international port and airport in Agadir. This will allow them to get the car and themselves back to Europe. Ian and Rob will have to make some difficult choices, but at least they have help of a person who knows the area, and the emotional support from all us here on the forum. When I spoke to him he sounded gutted, but glad to know there was support for them. Good luck guys! Juultje

LePlat, and both Tollefsons are on their way to the start. Both Brits out is a real blow, but the service team, who many of us know too are still out there working hard and going for it. They will still need our support! It is a long stage today. I just realised I never put the description on the forum, so here it is: "STAGE 6 - 11/01/2007 Tan Tan > Zouérat Connection: 414 km | Special: 394 km | Connection: 9 km Total: 817 km Navigation by heading Here’s the longest stage of the rally – by the end of the day, almost a thousand kilometres will have been clocked up! To set off on this long preliminary liaison leading to the Mauritanian border, you have to get up extremely early in the morning. Then you need to apply yourself to navigation by heading and off-road, yet more techniques for drivers and co-drivers to get to grips with again. At this stage in the rally, just one piece of advice: play for economy"

This is sad news. The guys worked so hard last night and did absolutely everything they could. Hats of to them, they did brilliantly. The support worked through the night, found the best parts they could locally and fitted them as successfully as was possible. They will be gutted for Ian and Rob that it didn't work. I cannot stress the importance of realising how tough this rally is on all involved. There are so many competitors out already. They have made the first stages very very tough. I hope Ian and Rob are ok, and await to hear what their next moves will be. The Dutch guys who were out in stage 4 got out of the sand, and were yesterday preparing their car to drive to Atar and follow the race to Dakar from there. It is wait and see from here. Timi, Claire nad the kids, best of luck to you all as well. I imagine they will still have good stories to tell when they come home... Juultje

I've been following these messages, the various website and the live tracking with considerable interest. I remember well watching these guys race for the first time at Radnor, and thinking how well they were doing. I've watched 'em closely ever since. The whole of the 'Mercia Massive' racing collective (inc. Ian, Rob, Chris, James, Tim, Amanda, Neil, Sarah to name a few) were really welcoming and were, for a large part, responsible for my own start in racing. The Dakar was their dream, and there they now are. I'm chuffed to bits for them and wish that I could be there waving spanners for them (which my landlord was doing till about 4am!) or waving a camera - it must be an awesome experience. It's not just their dream they're living - it's many of ours as well. So, no pressure lads! Seriously, I wish them the very best and look forward to better news in the event. They've got passion, they've got talent. They have my utmost respect and support. Go guys!! Cheers Nic

Chris called - Yes, Ian and Rob are still in. The service guys have worked wonders!!! The problem was that the sump cracked and they lost oil on stage. This in turn damaged the engine and they were towed on liaison back to biv. On close inspection it was found that the crankshaft bearing had been damaged. A couple of the lads visited a warehouse at 04.00am this morning with some locals and found a bearing of similar proportions. This fitted, the engine has been fired up and they are off to stage. The solution is not ideal so we must follow them closely today and wish them the very best of luck!

There are some pretty spectacular ones. This gives a good idea of the kind of terrain they are driving through. There are about 37 pictures of Ian and Rob on this site, and similar amounts for all other competitors. Juultje

Ian and LePlat both over the finish line. Ian and Rob seem to be having a small well deserved break, as his car hasn't moved. At such a logical place to have a break, I hope they are having a good one! The two Tollefsons are definitely together, having past CP3 only seconds of each other. Maybe after last night Ivar is quite keen to keep Nick a bit closer. Nick must be so tired, as he was still stuck in the sand when I checked late last night! Hats of to him! Doing well there! The two trucks are making good progress. The 585 is quite a bit ahead of the 565 now, having past CP3 at 15:57. John told me yesterday he wasn't expecting to have any telephone signal from today. So if anyone doesn't hear from their loved ones, that is probably why; don't worry. I have not tested it myself yet and things might have changed since last year so don't let me stop you from trying. They are bound to leave area with signal over the next couple of days though! Last comment... I just hope they have had some time to look at where they were today, as they were going through some of the most spectacular mountains on the planet... So I have been told. Juultje

Richard and Kane are indeed listed under withdrawals. Shame for them. It is far too early to be out really. The list of withdrawals is massive. They are lucky at least to have made it to the bivouac. From there they have more options for what to do next. They will not be stuck like you may have seen in Charlie Boorman's Race to Dakar. Well done Ian!!! Juultje

Thanks Andy for the iri track updates. Contraty to belief I do have a full time job, so that's great. Ta! At the moment Ian and Rob are not far from the finish. They seem to be together with LePlat. Both Nick and Ivar Tollefson, both Norwegian cars, seem to be together on iri track. (The scale of the map is such that even though they seem together they may not have a clue about each other's whereabouts!). Richard car appears on iri track as being at the bivouac, last night's bivouac unfortunately. However, lots of people did not make it last night, yet there are not that many withdrawals. The Trucks, YAHOOOOOO!!!! They are both on stage, both very close together, with the 585, the 6x6 with Chris Hammond on it, slightly in front! It is conforting to think that John Walker in the 565 might be behind them to support them if anything happens. Other than that no news on our guys. There are still people stuck in the sand at yesterday's CP2, including some Dutch drivers I have met. Shame because they did so well last year when they were driving a bowler. I'm still hoping, with the rest of the Netherlands, that they will get through some how. Even though they have missed their official starting time they are still hoping. I'm hoping the same for Richard. There is no harm in hope is there.... Juultje

They have a start time so by default we think they are still in. Nick has just arrived at Biv and they have 10 mins to turn around and head for the start. Richard is still stuck and may be out of time. The other T4 who stopped to help is now heading for Biv.

They all seem to be out of the stage, on the road to or from the bivouac. Ian and Ivar are obviously on their way to the next stage, Nick shows to be at the bivouac, while the 565 truck and Richard show to be on that road, but I do not know if they are coming or going. If Richards car is ok, he may be better of staying where he is for the start of the next stage! Who know what is to happen next. Not much sleep for the guys last night, that's for sure. Juultje

Hi there Just to confirm Juultje's posting Truck 585 is now heading from CP1 directly to Bivuoauc (can't think of correct spelling in this panic!!!). The truck is quite sick but still mobile. They know that there are problems around CP2 but have been told to get to Biv to get fixed. Their info is that this should incur penalties and not exclusion. More info will be available in the morning

Amanda has just phoned Chris. On iritrack they seem to have gone off the track completely. Looking at the proper map of the area CP1 is at the end of a road. This road leads to the bivouac, although it is not the road they are meant to take. They are seemingly on this road. They are hoping on penalty points, but still being allowed to drive after their truck gets fixed tonight. I have spoken to John, but only for a few seconds. With cars and trucks potentially not making it, day 4 is not turning out too good. Let's hope or pray and keep our fingers crossed for all of them. Juultje

I phoned John earlier on, when I knew they had arrived at the bivouac. He had sent me a few texts before: "At bivouac with the defender. Mention Jody on the forum. Jody is a mechanic doing a grand job and contributing to banter. His mum will be thinking of him. I'm growing a beard. Good team in my truck. Again, we broke no rules!" The T4 with Chris seems to be about half way the stage now. Keep it up guys! Nick Tollefson seems to be at CP2. His dad, Ivar is at the bivouac. Ian, LePlat and Richard are on their way. John is well aware of Ian's problems, and so will the other mechanics be. It will be fixed with no problems. Well done to Ian and Rob for getting through. They made it exciting there for a while, but being stuck on iri track for a while just before I left work, so i am just glad to see them through! Standings at the moment: Ian and Rob, 80 on stage, 66 overall. Ivan and Quin, 42 on stage, 33 overall. Alain LePlat and Pascal Ferrand, 76 on stage, 73 overall. Richard and Kane's numbers are not in yet. The other T4 has a head start, but does not seem to be going that much faster to be honest! I hope everyone is all right, also at this end of the world. It is an exciting time for us 'rallyWAGs' and other family and friends. Juultje

Subject: iri track update
Just come out of some meetings at work. I have realised that people without iri track can only get yesterday's posis. Todays route goes from Er Rachidia to Ouarzazate, a total of 679 kilometers. From this, the liason to get to the start was 96 kilometers. All cars and trucks are past this, and have started the stage, which is 405 kilometers in total. on iritrack I can see some points giving me an indication how far they have gotten in kilometers. These are just guesses: Ivar and Quin: well past 274 km, Ian and Rob, very near the 274 Km mark, LePlat near the 213 Km mark, Richard and Kane about 185 Km into the stage, and Nick and Alec nearing the 158 Km mark. As for the trucks, 565 with John Walker is around the 92 Km mark, while 585 with Chris Hammond seems to have fallen behind a bit and has only completed about 25 km so far of the stage. This is all making it a bit too exciting!!! Amanda, I'll keep you posted as much as I can. the rest of the Dakar website seems to be stuck on yesterday's stage! They all still have a long way to go. Even after finishing this stage they have another 178 km to get to the bivouac. Juultje

Hi All, Seeing Eurosport last nght certainly hightlighted to me what the going was like on the stage. I see it as a great medium for us to get an in sight to what is being endured by car and the people in them. However, I could do agree with the comment that the race is about ALL those competing, not just the top few and maybe Eurosport could respect that a little better. Even so its still good that mentions were made. Great to see everyone getting through the stages and also to see that the vehicles are on the start line again the following day so well done to the support teams. cheers for now Dean Dean

Last night on Dutch television a big intervieuw with them. You probably can see it on their website or at rtlgp.nl/dakar And now: terug aan het werk KNUF

Iri track shows all the cars on their way. Ivar in front, then Ian, then Nick, then LePlat and then Richard. Pretty much the same order as yesterday. Ian and Nick not driving close together though. Richard will have to worry about the trucks again. Both T4 trucks have not started the stage yet. They seem to be further apart than yesterday as well, with 565 (John Walker) in front. Chris' truck on the way to the start of the stage. Juultje

This is a text I received from John at 17 minutes past 2 AM: All cars in good shape. Ian Rochelle very happy and well now, and delighted by all the support. He's cheered to think folk see his little car on live tracking. Iain and Paul from the T5 are working to repair T4 6x6. Everyone has had a hell of a long trip here and have made many mistakes and broken rules, leading to penalties. I was here first by hours and hours and made no mistake. Iain and Paul are amazed by the scenes over here. Not believing folk had climbed onto the truck when I said they had as we were driving until I stopped and they got out and looked! Negative temperatures and snow in the Atlas mountains I crossed through last night. I'm off to bed now to keep sleep reserves for 15 hour minefield/rock/dune/sand drive to come. Will not be able to put pictures on the site until I get home. John

STAGE 4 - 09/01/2007 Er Rachidia > Ouarzazate Connection: 96 km | Special: 405 km | Connection: 178 km Total: 679 km Dunes all round the horizon A first lesson in endurance. The second Moroccan special is a long one, and above all very varied – just like the whole of the Dakar 2007. For the novices, this is where the full-scale apprenticeship starts as they discover the dunes and experience their first thrills. This is also the moment to confronter the multiple traps in Africa. The priority of the moment: don’t get carried away. A “private” bivouac will be set up for motorcycle racers approximately 100 kilometres from Ouarzazate. Assistance vehicles will not be allowed to enter the working park, as this will be an area where only competitors can work on their motorcycles.

Right you are Andy. They do not stop for bikes and cars! Luckely The Tollefsons, and Ian an Rob look like they might be in before the trucks come into play! The CP1 times are finally there. Ian and Rob are staying very close to Nick Tollefson, in inself a reassuring thought as this means they are not alone if anything does happen. So far so good! By the way, 'the day's route' under 'live' on the Dakar site gives a better idea of the surface they have to work their way through. It looks like last year's iritrack, but you cant get the cars on it. Other iri track addicts, to you have to start from scratch too everytime you want an update? It does not seem to update itself this year? Juultje

On the first part of the special, there are very many navigation changes. This is a real maze of tracks. But even once out of this labyrinth, no lapses of attention will be tolerated. They are currently about 56 kilometres of Tanger. They want to get to the END of stage 3, to be ready for the bowlers coming in. This is in Er Rachidia. For those who do not have a map; this is a looooong way. Driving through the night they are expecting to arrive there between 4 or 5 AM. These rankings can be found, with times etc. on the official Dakar Website, under 'live' and then 'standings' You can choose to see the cars, today's stage rankings by clicking 'stage' under cars, and the overall rankings by clicking 'overall'. There have already been many complaints about iritrack. Not to me, but on other websites. Iritrack takes a lot of space on the computer and will slow everything up a lot. Most people seem to have this problem. Also, it is far less clear than last year. Let's hope they change it back to what they had last year. Although, I am sure the map itself will become clearer as the stages in Africa get longer. Juultje

Ian and Rob have finished 85th on today's stage in 1 hour an 14 minutes, 15 minutes behind the number 1. They are now on the way to the ferry. As are Ivar and Quin (58th), Nick and Alex (71st), Alain LePlat 108th. Richard and Kane are still on the track.... Now it is off to Africa!!! This is where the excitement really begins. Juultje

Morning.Timi looking at iritrack it is showing 1st three cars through completing stage in just over 10mins.Now if i read it right the top 10 cars set off at 3 min intervals then the next at 2 mins then 1 min then after that 30 secs, so if that is correct Ian will be on stage in or about 1 hour.A short timed stage today so traffic again going to be a problem although i think it's more gravel looking at top runners times. Will check up though.

John's in the T5, with Iain and Paul. They have just finished and are on their way to the hotel. It is 1 AM, just like here in Britain, and they will be leaving at 6AM. Day one, and the time of not much sleep has started already! All the best guys! By the way, the support trucks can not be followed on the Dakar site or anywhere else I know of. Only through this forum and the messages we get from them here. So you'll just have to keep checking this site and make it your home page for the next couple of weeks. The cows are moo-ing in the field, and I keep on thinking there is a bowler driver just putting his foot down! Time for my bed. Juultje

Well here we are all set and ready to go. We're just watching the time tick by until we go to the organisation's briefings tonight at 19:30 in the Centro Cultural De Belem. Last year this was introduced by a breath-taking film showing off all the excitement that the rally provides. I hope we're in for such a treat this year. Apart from that everyone is keen to get the vehicles back and get going with the great adventure! The vehicles have been isolated in 'Parc Ferme' since scrutineering (to stop and naughty adjustments to them between the scrutineering and the first day's racing). Tomorrow we'll start the European section of the rally and want to get it, and Sunday done so we can get into Africa and on with more of a routine to the rally. No more preparation now. We're prepared! Tomorrow you can get even more involved... Want to track some top talent? ... 353: Ivar Tollefsen & Quin Evans. 399: Nick Tollefsen & Alex Cole. 454: Alain Le Platt & Co Driver. 460: Ian Rochelle & Robert Pugh. 478: Richard Hayward & Kane Athay. 565: John Walker, Mark Hawkins & Chris Hunt. 585: Jean-Marie Lacour, Chris Hammond & James Willett. Enjoy!

Subject: Scrutineering
There we were among the first few in for scrutineering this morning. The sun was shining and there was a very calm atmosphere in the scrutineering area. In fact for most of the morning the whole place seemed quite deserted of competitors! There were plenty scrutineers though and there were soon picking faults and noting misdemeanours. The routing was a little different to last year. There was a lot more paperwork and information to collect and there was a clearly extended attention to safety. The truck scrutineering didn’t follow a routine one would expect. It certainly kept everyone on their toes and left some of us with a little bit of work to get done before we got onto the African continent. The T5 was busy all day. First with the early scrutineering, then with some transfer of parts from another T5 and then with some sorting of tyres (oh my so so many of them!) back at a garage workshop the team has been using. Oh boy Andy, you should have seen my reverse the truck into place in the dark! The whole team had an absolutely delicious meal together in the evening and then it was back to the hotel for a perfectly reasonable bedtime. So tomorrow we’ll get the rest of the Wildcats through and do a fair bit more fiddling with all the thousands of bits and bobs on the T5. Hope everyone is well back home. Don’t forget to check out the photos! Goodnight.

Morning all.Looking at weather reports it looks quite good, certainly for the Europe leg.Reports for Africa showing similar temps which should help ease things until it gets a bit more frantic. Not too bad you've got scrutineering this morning,at least if there are any issues you can sort them. Srutineering for Dakar should be made into interactive board game. Subject: Tuesday
Nice to hear from you guys. Hey what's all this about vehicle manouvering causing chaos and a rocket attack! Ha, yes, we see what you mean Andy... all normal traffic rules required some adjustment to allow the emergence of a certain T5 6x6! Scrutineering tomorrow for all of us. Tomorrow morning in fact! Yep, for all cars and trucks! So our Tuesday started off slow – gathering at Luton Airport, checking in, hanging around and all that, the flight, the step outside of the plane into a whole different climate zone… ahhhh, lovely, just lovely, then the inevitable ferrying to a somewhat smart Holiday Inn before a visit to the T4 4x4 truck, the T5 4x4 Land Rover and the T5 6x6 truck and race cars… for a bit of the fiddling and tweeking and stickering and so on. Something new for this year is the organisation stipulation that the T5’s must have organisation VHF two-way radios fitted so we had to get the T5’s set up to receive and power them. Meanwhile we were sorting plans to get the T4 6x6 truck sorted out with the spares it needed to carry. That meant a late night transfer of parts from the T5 6x6 leading to the first of what will be may late bed-times! All good fun though! Team bonding ‘and all that’, backed up by much assistance, refreshment and feeding from Amanda Garratley and Juultje Goldie. Its great to have them here with us! Fingers crossed for the scrutineering! Goodnight.

Subject: Happy New Year
Thanks very much Andy. I'd like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year too and most of all I wish everyone on the Rally a successful and safe time! I've already had my own little adventure this year, beginning right after midnight this morning and lasting all the way through the night... repairing storm damage! Yes, you know the storm that hit us all in the UK last night? Well, it went somewhat mad for a period of about 45 minutes at my house just to finish my 2006 off with a bang. A few bangs actually! The roof of my house was showered with twigs and branches, all carried great distances by the wind before making their own thatch over my own roof! Some of them were really hefty logs. Two huge trees keeled over. One of them up-rooted and finished with the same pitch as one of the roofs and went to sleep on its slates! The other made a very neat job of snapping its trunk making a pivot just high enough to save a dry stone dyke just made, and it even managed to fall inches from scratching my most prized sankey trailer! A Christmas tree appeared by one of my cars... literally planted beside it! It was the top half of a huge fir tree that had been brought to us whole and then panted feet deep upright beside the car! Another car was 'bonked' by a fair-sized branch that left its mark. As well as bringing all this the wind also took a lot away... all the felt off a double garage roof! Grrr! Theif! So, as it happend I had enough felt 'in stock' to recover the garage. I have been replacing a substantial part of the house roof. I went up onto it earlier on New Years Eve to strengthen the half finished job in anticipation of the storm. It survived and the felt I had for the job was very very handy to have to replace the garage's! A very tricky job to do in pitch dark in a storm though! Similarly removing all the 'thatch' was... well... very adventurous! A little bit of chainsaw work sorted the trees. After all that I had to get going to Edinbugh airport without being thwarted by roads blocked by fallen trees, in time for the flight down to Luton. I made it and was in a nice hotel bed beside the airport by 11am. Bliss! I've just got up to have a quick feed and visit this Forum. Back to bed now... best preparation for a Dakar?... SLEEP! Goodnight
