iri track update |
|
Thanks Andy for the iri track updates. Contraty to belief I do have a full time job, so that's great. Ta! At the moment Ian and Rob are not far from the finish. They seem to be together with LePlat. Both Nick and Ivar Tollefson, both Norwegian cars, seem to be together on iri track. (The scale of the map is such that even though they seem together they may not have a clue about each other's whereabouts!). Richard car appears on iri track as being at the bivouac, last night's bivouac unfortunately. However, lots of people did not make it last night, yet there are not that many withdrawals. The Trucks, YAHOOOOOO!!!! They are both on stage, both very close together, with the 585, the 6x6 with Chris Hammond on it, slightly in front! It is conforting to think that John Walker in the 565 might be behind them to support them if anything happens. Other than that no news on our guys. There are still people stuck in the sand at yesterday's CP2, including some Dutch drivers I have met. Shame because they did so well last year when they were driving a bowler. I'm still hoping, with the rest of the Netherlands, that they will get through some how. Even though they have missed their official starting time they are still hoping. I'm hoping the same for Richard. There is no harm in hope is there.... Juultje |

I phoned Rob this morning(I talked fast!!!)At 8am, they were on their way to the start of the next stage. The windscreen had been fixed, and new steering put on . Rob said it was'nt someone throwing a stone that broke the windscreen, but a car overtook and flicked the stones at it. They had a mention on Eurosport again last night, the self funding ones are called "privateers". Rob and Ian were mentioned twice!!(proud mum and aunty!!!!) |

Chris just called - Truck 585 missed CP2 and headed straight for Biv. They arrived at 2.00am and the mechanics are still working on the truck to get it fixed. They have a start time so by default we think they are still in. Nick has just arrived at Biv and they have 10 mins to turn around and head for the start. Richard is still stuck and may be out of time. The other T4 who stopped to help is now heading for Biv. |

They all seem to be out of the stage, on the road to or from the bivouac. Ian and Ivar are obviously on their way to the next stage, Nick shows to be at the bivouac, while the 565 truck and Richard show to be on that road, but I do not know if they are coming or going. If Richards car is ok, he may be better of staying where he is for the start of the next stage! Who know what is to happen next. Not much sleep for the guys last night, that's for sure. Juultje |

I did think that to be the case with 585 as it was taking a different bearing. It makes sense if they can take penalties and continue on with their role. The stage today has effected some retirements and the coming days will take their toll.Nick Tidboald would like to pass on his best wishes to Ian and Rob plus all the mechanics.Anyway the wind is howling the rain is lashing down and the dog needs a pee.Night all sleep well for tomorrow is another long day!!!!!! |

Description stage 5 |
|
For those who are going to make it to tomorrows stage (think possitive, all of them could still make it!) This is the description of their route. -------------"STAGE 5 - 10/01/2007 Ouarzazate > Tan Tan Connection: 164 km | Special: 325 km | Connection: 289 km Total: 768 km The wheels in the Atlas Mountains Dakar regulars will have rallied from Ouarzazate to Tan Tan on three occasions in recent. Yet despite this, they’ll never have taken the 2007 route on a long-distance trek before. On this special, the drivers are going to be getting a taste of the Atlas Mountains, a feast for the eyes that means the trucks will have to take a slightly different route, a few kilometres shorter. On average, the scenery is dramatic, lunar: for the connoisseurs, a mixture of the Ventoux and the Izoard...."---------------- PS I'm obviously not a connoisseur, because I haven't a clue what this bit means!!! |

Hi there Just to confirm Juultje's posting Truck 585 is now heading from CP1 directly to Bivuoauc (can't think of correct spelling in this panic!!!). The truck is quite sick but still mobile. They know that there are problems around CP2 but have been told to get to Biv to get fixed. Their info is that this should incur penalties and not exclusion. More info will be available in the morning |

update re Chris' truck |
|
Amanda has just phoned Chris. On iritrack they seem to have gone off the track completely. Looking at the proper map of the area CP1 is at the end of a road. This road leads to the bivouac, although it is not the road they are meant to take. They are seemingly on this road. They are hoping on penalty points, but still being allowed to drive after their truck gets fixed tonight. I have spoken to John, but only for a few seconds. With cars and trucks potentially not making it, day 4 is not turning out too good. Let's hope or pray and keep our fingers crossed for all of them. Juultje |

Amanda and everyone else, my appologies. You are right. I do not know why I thought Richard was on his way to bivouac! Thanks for the correction. They are both around CP2, as are many other cars I believe. Must be carnage out there. Even more admiration for those who did get through! Well done. Let's hope John Walker and his crew get them out. They are at CP2 as well. Chris indeed showing at CP 1. Going on slow but steady. Sand dunes still to come. |

They have just reached CP1 (230km from start of stage). They now face sand dunes in which Car's 399 and 478 are stuck. 399 and 478 are yet to reach CP2 (309kms from start of stage). According to Dakar site dunes are between km 292 and 320kms. I await more information |

I phoned John earlier on, when I knew they had arrived at the bivouac. He had sent me a few texts before: "At bivouac with the defender. Mention Jody on the forum. Jody is a mechanic doing a grand job and contributing to banter. His mum will be thinking of him. I'm growing a beard. Good team in my truck. Again, we broke no rules!" The T4 with Chris seems to be about half way the stage now. Keep it up guys! Nick Tollefson seems to be at CP2. His dad, Ivar is at the bivouac. Ian, LePlat and Richard are on their way. John is well aware of Ian's problems, and so will the other mechanics be. It will be fixed with no problems. Well done to Ian and Rob for getting through. They made it exciting there for a while, but being stuck on iri track for a while just before I left work, so i am just glad to see them through! Standings at the moment: Ian and Rob, 80 on stage, 66 overall. Ivan and Quin, 42 on stage, 33 overall. Alain LePlat and Pascal Ferrand, 76 on stage, 73 overall. Richard and Kane's numbers are not in yet. The other T4 has a head start, but does not seem to be going that much faster to be honest! I hope everyone is all right, also at this end of the world. It is an exciting time for us 'rallyWAGs' and other family and friends. Juultje |

At approx 11 kms into stage the truck was handling very unusually. On inspection it was found that the front shock/s? and their mounts had sheared. Chris called at approx 13.30hrs to break the bad news that they were 99.8% sure their rally was over. I have not heard from him since but Juultje has just spoken to John and their intention is to limp the stage /liaison and John is waiting in Biv ready to get them fixed. The iritrack confirms that they are now moving slowly. The very best of luck guys!!!! |

iri track update |
|
Just come out of some meetings at work. I have realised that people without iri track can only get yesterday's posis. Todays route goes from Er Rachidia to Ouarzazate, a total of 679 kilometers. From this, the liason to get to the start was 96 kilometers. All cars and trucks are past this, and have started the stage, which is 405 kilometers in total. on iritrack I can see some points giving me an indication how far they have gotten in kilometers. These are just guesses: Ivar and Quin: well past 274 km, Ian and Rob, very near the 274 Km mark, LePlat near the 213 Km mark, Richard and Kane about 185 Km into the stage, and Nick and Alec nearing the 158 Km mark. As for the trucks, 565 with John Walker is around the 92 Km mark, while 585 with Chris Hammond seems to have fallen behind a bit and has only completed about 25 km so far of the stage. This is all making it a bit too exciting!!! Amanda, I'll keep you posted as much as I can. the rest of the Dakar website seems to be stuck on yesterday's stage! They all still have a long way to go. Even after finishing this stage they have another 178 km to get to the bivouac. Juultje |

Hi All, Seeing Eurosport last nght certainly hightlighted to me what the going was like on the stage. I see it as a great medium for us to get an in sight to what is being endured by car and the people in them. However, I could do agree with the comment that the race is about ALL those competing, not just the top few and maybe Eurosport could respect that a little better. Even so its still good that mentions were made. Great to see everyone getting through the stages and also to see that the vehicles are on the start line again the following day so well done to the support teams. cheers for now Dean Dean |

Iri track shows all the cars on their way. Ivar in front, then Ian, then Nick, then LePlat and then Richard. Pretty much the same order as yesterday. Ian and Nick not driving close together though. Richard will have to worry about the trucks again. Both T4 trucks have not started the stage yet. They seem to be further apart than yesterday as well, with 565 (John Walker) in front. Chris' truck on the way to the start of the stage. Juultje |

This is a text I received from John at 17 minutes past 2 AM: All cars in good shape. Ian Rochelle very happy and well now, and delighted by all the support. He's cheered to think folk see his little car on live tracking. Iain and Paul from the T5 are working to repair T4 6x6. Everyone has had a hell of a long trip here and have made many mistakes and broken rules, leading to penalties. I was here first by hours and hours and made no mistake. Iain and Paul are amazed by the scenes over here. Not believing folk had climbed onto the truck when I said they had as we were driving until I stopped and they got out and looked! Negative temperatures and snow in the Atlas mountains I crossed through last night. I'm off to bed now to keep sleep reserves for 15 hour minefield/rock/dune/sand drive to come. Will not be able to put pictures on the site until I get home. John |

Hi Gillian, unfortunately I do not have Eurosport either. I have a few bits and pieces though. I'm glad people at school see the forum. John can read what you write here, although he will only be able to do this if he gets time, and there is not much of that. Anything I hear from him will be on the forum. Maybe you could send me an email about restaurants... Juultje |

Hey Juultje, just thought id write a wee note to see how john is going. If he calls tell him i said hi! :) I'm finding very interesting to read the forum, not that i know who anyone is but ive heard john mention a few of the names. I don't have eurosport and have been asking around but suposedly you cant tape it? Is this true? Which is a shame because i'd prob take a tape in to school, to show the kids! Anyway its all very exciting im very jealous. Did you enjoy seeing them off? Was there lots of atmosphere there? Will see you soon after all this to sample that french resteraunt. Love Gillian x |

STAGE 4 - 09/01/2007 Er Rachidia > Ouarzazate Connection: 96 km | Special: 405 km | Connection: 178 km Total: 679 km Dunes all round the horizon A first lesson in endurance. The second Moroccan special is a long one, and above all very varied – just like the whole of the Dakar 2007. For the novices, this is where the full-scale apprenticeship starts as they discover the dunes and experience their first thrills. This is also the moment to confronter the multiple traps in Africa. The priority of the moment: don’t get carried away. A “private” bivouac will be set up for motorcycle racers approximately 100 kilometres from Ouarzazate. Assistance vehicles will not be allowed to enter the working park, as this will be an area where only competitors can work on their motorcycles. |

Hello everyone. It is so good to get all these messages on the forum! This is just what it was meant for! I'm certain all messages will be much appreciated. Well done for Ian and Rob plus the T4's to make it to Eurosport. These are the only 2 1/2 weeks in the year that I wish we had more channels on our tv! I haven't seen anything yet! I'll copy the description of the next stage in the next commentary box. Juultje |

Ian looks like he is almost there. The trucks are still on the way, but nearing the end of the stage. They will have to drive the last 200 - 250 km in the dark. Well done to all! |

John arrived in Er Rachidia at 9am this morning. (Not 4 or 5 as he expected) They have been sleeping and will now be preparing for the boys to finish and come in. Ivar is on his way in good time, and I keep on refreshing iri track waiting for Ian, Rob & Nick, Alec to pass. They should be through any minute now, but who knows when it will show on iri track. Timi, you are definitely not the only one struggling! And Hello to John Fish, long time no see. John says hi back! And eh.... how about next year??? ;-) Juultje |

hi i feel a little reassured that everyone having the same problems with iritrack----i thougth it was just me being me. ----not a great fan of the tracking system this year. i think we were spoiled last year. find it a full time job to keep bringing up the pages( doesn't update) and reseting everything. find it hard not being able to work out miles and times. just watching the coloured cars and trying to remember where they were before. anyway. they seem to be doing great---the important part. should be finishing stage soon. |

Hello everybody. I have the utmost admiration for everyone involved having spent 10 days doing the optic with Ian, Rob,John and Chris last year.I was totally unaware of the places sand can get! The Optic was only a taste of what the "boys" are into at the moment. I wish them all the best, John/Jake Fish |

Right you are Andy. They do not stop for bikes and cars! Luckely The Tollefsons, and Ian an Rob look like they might be in before the trucks come into play! The CP1 times are finally there. Ian and Rob are staying very close to Nick Tollefson, in inself a reassuring thought as this means they are not alone if anything does happen. So far so good! By the way, 'the day's route' under 'live' on the Dakar site gives a better idea of the surface they have to work their way through. It looks like last year's iritrack, but you cant get the cars on it. Other iri track addicts, to you have to start from scratch too everytime you want an update? It does not seem to update itself this year? Juultje |

As Andy said in reply to my message, it seems as if all Bowler Spirit cars have past CP1. However, none of the cars times are available yet, not even the major players, see dakar site under 'live' then 'posis'. Ian and Rob doing fine by the looks of it. No news is good news. Juultje |

On the next iritrack update we will be able to see Tollefson and son cross CP1, Ian and Rob seem to be doing well, so maybe they will be past it as well. The others are near enough too. I have managed to fool my computer to enable me to write messages on the forum and see iritrack at the same time using Internet Explorer for iritrack, and Mozilla Firefox for the forum and other Dakar sites. Very handy just in case anyone else is having the same difficulties with iritrack slowing down everything. Juultje |

Tollefson seems to be at the start of the stage on iri track. Ian is a bit behind, but is nearing the start. The trucks still seem to be near Nadar. For some reason my computer is not letting me see iri track and write on the forum at the same time so this is going to be fun, swapping between the two all the time while at work! Well done guys for getting this far in the first place. The amount of work and organisation involved in getting into the rally in the first place is phenominal, but there they are! And here we are behind our little computer screens trying to get as much information as possible. Glad to see you are back safe Amanda! Juultje |

STAGE 3 - 08/01/2007 Nador > Er Rachidia Connection: 205 km | Special: 252 km | Connection: 191 km Total: 648 km Head-spinning The start of the business is very serious, particularly in terms of navigation. On the first part of the special, there are very many navigation changes. This is a real maze of tracks. But even once out of this labyrinth, no lapses of attention will be tolerated. And though the rocky trails seem ideal for speed, the many wades will soon bring the drivers back to reality. Take care! |

John Goldie, Iain and Paul have been on the go too today. John phoned after I asked him for an update, as we cannot get any T5 information without contact. They got up early to get to the ferry and crossed as soon as they knew nobody would need them this side of the water. THEY WERE THE FIRST!!!! TO REACH AFRICA. And let the adventure begin! They are currently about 56 kilometres of Tanger. They want to get to the END of stage 3, to be ready for the bowlers coming in. This is in Er Rachidia. For those who do not have a map; this is a looooong way. Driving through the night they are expecting to arrive there between 4 or 5 AM. I am going to copy a bit of the Dakar site in the next entry to let you see their description of tomorrow's stage. Juultje |

Amanda and claire phoned to say they have seen everyone come off the stage. Ian and Rob were at a service station to service their car. Every service station they see is full of competitors servicing cars. Claire sounded great, and very enthusiastic. I must say, having been to the scruteneering and the start, the scale of the event is just spectacular. There is nothing quite like it really! Claire and the boys and I think Amanda are all flying home this afternoon. Safe travels to them, and looking forward to more stories from them on this forum! Juultje |

Overall Ranks |
|
Ivar Tollefson 58th, Nick Tollefson 66th, Alain LePlat 98th, Ian and Rob 77th, Richard Hayward 126th. The T4 trucks have not raced today, so nothing has changed there. These rankings can be found, with times etc. on the official Dakar Website, under 'live' and then 'standings' You can choose to see the cars, today's stage rankings by clicking 'stage' under cars, and the overall rankings by clicking 'overall'. There have already been many complaints about iritrack. Not to me, but on other websites. Iritrack takes a lot of space on the computer and will slow everything up a lot. Most people seem to have this problem. Also, it is far less clear than last year. Let's hope they change it back to what they had last year. Although, I am sure the map itself will become clearer as the stages in Africa get longer. Juultje |

Morning.Timi looking at iritrack it is showing 1st three cars through completing stage in just over 10mins.Now if i read it right the top 10 cars set off at 3 min intervals then the next at 2 mins then 1 min then after that 30 secs, so if that is correct Ian will be on stage in or about 1 hour.A short timed stage today so traffic again going to be a problem although i think it's more gravel looking at top runners times. Will check up though. |

John's in the T5, with Iain and Paul. They have just finished and are on their way to the hotel. It is 1 AM, just like here in Britain, and they will be leaving at 6AM. Day one, and the time of not much sleep has started already! All the best guys! By the way, the support trucks can not be followed on the Dakar site or anywhere else I know of. Only through this forum and the messages we get from them here. So you'll just have to keep checking this site and make it your home page for the next couple of weeks. The cows are moo-ing in the field, and I keep on thinking there is a bowler driver just putting his foot down! Time for my bed. Juultje |
