Just a note from the service truck as John Fish pilots it to Le Harve. We
are currently 85km from Marseille. We've already been from where the ship
docked (in Marseille) to Nice to drop Ian, Rob and Chris off at the airport
and get the Wildcat loaded onto the trailer behind the service truck. I've
got a load more pictures to display but you'll all have to wait until Saturday
before I do! Ta for now John Goldie

Subject: Big Thanks to Juultje and John Goldie and of course, Keith Banyard!
Thank you Juultje and John - I really felt that I was there with the guys
experiencing what you described so well. The reports were super and eagarly
awaited every day! I think the overwhelming theme was that they all worked
so well together. I was there at the start and obviously didn't want to leave,
but to see a group of guys constantly giggling like kids will stay with me
for a long time. I think this has been an adventure that will make many stories.
A 'Hugh Thank you' goes to Keith Banyard who masterminded the whole plan,
made the event what it was, and provided the 'wisely words' when they were
needed. I'm sure you are proud of the boys and glad that the truck will be
in your hands again soon - but you must remember to keep it clean! (only joking,
it is a spendid piece of kit that stands apart from the opposition and offers
the best luxury that is possible in such conditions - I'm making it sound
like a 6 star hotel now - Can I book a place for your next adventure (only
if it is without sand though!) Take care and here's to the next project!!

Subject: Today's Report
John's report for today. Many pictures will be on line soon! "Sunday
afternoon: It was the clutch pressure plate - not the hydraulics! After some
investigations into the hydraulics the decision was made by the service crew
- the gearbox had to come out. About this time John Goldie had just finished
the latest update on the website and was able to join Chris and John Fish
for the job. The job is relatively straight forward on a Wildcat. There's
just a number of components that have to be removed before the gearbox can
be withdrawn and the clutch revealed. The greatest challenge is the replacement
of the gearbox after the clutch replacement - precision alignment is necessary
but its very difficult to achieve when away from full workshop facilities
because it inevitably means mechanics have to lie in the sand and lift it
into place beneath the car! On this occasion after all the hard work to remove
the gearbox the clutch was indeed found to be the culprit for Ian's difficulty
changing gear. The pressure plate linings had disintegrated. Replacement was
obviously going to cure the fault so the service crew were confident Ian would
be able to finish the race, even before they completed the service. The service
was completed at 2am. Ian's car was back to its perfect self - even washed
and polished(!) for the final stage. Ian started today very concious of the
efforts made by the service crew through last night and was particularly careful
to secure a finish. Most of the stage was run on fast stony tracks 'G1 country'
(a G1 is a very tough tyre) and a few flat dry lake beds. Ian and Rob reported
that the finish was a delight - they could see the finish from afar and the
run into it was along a beach. Through the stage they overtook many competitors
because yesterday's difficulties led to a late start time today. Overtaking
was frequently difficult. Ian felt a great sense of achievement at the finish,
he felt that they had exceeded their own expectations but also that without
the efforts of the service crew they would not have made it. Rob couldn't
believe that they'd actually made it! He was pleased to see the service crew
there to greet them but now feels a little flat with the thought that it is
all over now. Both of them are extremely grateful for the help and advice
from the service crew. Now then readers: There's a few things that have to
be said to finish off the main part of this story. First of all we have to
thank Keith Banyard for the opportunity his efforts make for people like Ian
and Rob. Keith was dearly missed throughout this rally, Ian, Rob, Chris and
'the Johns' wanted him with them, leading the way. John Fish was the most
fantastic company and assistance to everyone involved and it will be hard
to part from him when he heads back home. Chris Hammond was typically the
man to rely on when in doubt about all things racing, navigating and Wildcat!
The team is very lucky to have him. Beside that he was also 'a knight in shining
armour' for many other thwarted racers in the event. He had an incridible
knack for totally turning around people in dispair to people in repair! John
Goldie was 'here, there and everywhere' in terms of driving/I.T./servicing/logistics/organising
and P.R. The team was delighted to see Richard and Karina in Gerba, and to
have Richard on the phone for technical advice when needed. Back home there
was Amanda, Juultje and Andy sorting out all sorts of information exchanges
'at the drop of a hat'. Without their work the sort of thing you are reading
now would not be available to you. Their work offers little reward - its isolated
and unpublicised. Readers please note - Amanda, Juultje and Andy are stars!
Big thanks to them from all in Tunisia, Keith Banyard and all you readers!
Final thanks to all you readers - for your good wishes and your interest.
They are warmly felt by everyone out in Tunisia. Now its time for the party
in Gerba to begin, then its the long road home, longest for all for 'the Johns'
who'll be bringing the kit all the way back to Blighty. Is it raining?"

Subject: Sunday's Report
John sent me the following: 'A whole other experience today! It started off
in a now routine fashion. The service crew stopped in at the start of the
stage on their way to the mid-point assistance site. They saw the first few
competitors away and made sure Ian and Rob were well sorted out for their
penultimate stage. This time John Fish piloted the service truck for the 'short
hop' to the assistance point, covering a rough and sandy track. They were
there in time to see even the first motorcyclists through before the cars.
When the cars started to come through it wasn't long before the service crew
felt a sense of drama in the air. It was obvious by the timing and order of
the cars coming through that this stage was thwarting many. Meanwhile Ian
and Rob had started well, going through 'dunelets' (small mounds of talcum-powder-like
sand dunes, each 5 to 10 feet high). About 70km through the stage they shot
over a dune trying to pass another car and landed awkwardly on the next, breaking
their front right-hand-side half shaft. Trying to proceed in three-wheel-drive
(with all diffs locked) they got stuck at 100km and in their attempts to get
out they realised that they must also have broken their other front half-shaft.
They got a tow back just enough to put them on ground that was supportive
enough for them to be able to jack up the car enough to change the half shafts.
The engine temperatures had been high during the dunes so they also allowed
enough time to pass for it to cool down before continuing. Also by then the
trip-meter accuracy was well out after much wheel spinning but they managed
to make it to the assistance point at 151km and at last everything was revealed
to the assistance crew. During this drama the assistance crew had been trying
to find out what they could about Ian and Rob. John Goldie got through to
the organisation at C.P.2 after iritrack tracking showed car 242 there and
stationary. From that the service crew were at least able to find out that
Ian and Rob were OK and were dealing with their difficulties. When Ian and
Rob eventually did come through the assistance site their car was in perfect
condition again and they merely conveyed that to the service crew before pressing
onto fast tracks. Only 6km later Ian found he could not change gear. He was
stuck in 4th. They stopped and assuming that the service crew would already
have moved on back to the bivouac (which they hadn't) they decided to try
to complete the stage in 4th! Ian knew it was possible to use another gear
after engaging it when stopped so if they found 4th wouldn't get them through
they would stop and try another. For the 2 check points they had to get 'stamps'
at Ian slowed to stall speed and Rob shouted at the marshal to stamp their
time card as they rolled by (at about 15mph!). Right at the end of the stage
a faulty road-book directed them past the finish line rather than through
it! Their last effort was doubling back to all the waving marshals to make
it across the line properly! Overall time today was 5hours 36 minutes. Their
lead over the next placed competitors yesterday acted as a great buffer today.
Other competitors also had substantial problems today, making Ian and Rob's
success enough to move them 2 places up. They were 30th today but now lie
12th overall! 1hour, 25minutes and 40 seconds behind 11th placed car 218!
Back at the bivouac Chris Hammond is directing the repair and servicing of
Ian's Wildcat. This includes replacing the front half shafts (because although
those fitted are new and function properly, they were fitted in difficult
circumstances). It is hoped that replacing clutch hydraulics will cure the
gear selection problem but the crew are prepared for gearbox/clutch replacement
if this is found necessary. While the service crew work in 36C Chris Hammond
is refreshed knowing his decision to advise carrying spare half shafts was
the correct one! No new pictures will be added today as there are no new images
from today. Perhaps there will be some of a tired service crew replacing a
clutch tonight that might be able to be posted tomorrow!'

Subject: MORE MORE MORE, Saturday's Report
"The night was cold again but Ian, Rob and the service crew awoke to
no dew at all this morning and wondered what this might herald. Indeed they
knew the day would involve new challenges for all of them so were even more
wary of the 'so far too good to be true' factor. Journeying north they all
had to make there way through dunes and then head across stony flatlands to
a bivouac swamped by 'V.I.P.s'. Following the recommendation of Chris, Ian
and Rob had 'G1's' back on their car after the racing in the dunes yesterday
shod with 'Mud-Terrains'. Although they were immediately onto dunes at the
start of the stage they were grateful for Chris' recommendation when they
made it through the relatively short dune section and started on vast distances
of fast paced gravel racing. John Goldie had also made vehicle preparations
for the day by lowering tyre pressures on the service truck to 4bar for the
off-road assistance route described by the organisers. After seeing Ian and
Rob safely to the start of the stage the service crew moved on to the mid-point
service site. Waiting there they counted the cars in; the first, the second,
the third, and so on. Would Ian and Rob be in in their hard-won 15th position?
They were! Too good to be true? Yes! Entering the service area Rob waving
wildly at the underside of the car as Ian brought it towards the service truck.
Chris and both Johns were on them in a flash to find out what the problem
was. It turned out that they were merely concerned that they might have caused
some damage to the car after hitting a rock. Immediately the impact site was
spotted - the front diff guard - but it was clear the guard had done its job.
It had absorbed the impact by deforming without allowing the axle to be damaged.
The service team checked the car over for 'spin-off' damage, found nothing
and sent them on their way, ecstatic again all-round! Following that it was
the service crew's time to cover a 'duneland'. The organisers had detailed
two routes for the assistance crews to follow according to their vehicle type.
This meant John Goldie had to pilot the MAN TGA 6x6 service truck along the
'off-road' route to the bivouac. Quickly they were into great drifts of sand
but one, after another, they were through them, thanks to much 'slick-shifting'
by John Goldie, the partially deflated tyres but largely thanks to this vehicle's
exceptional overall capability. This time Ian and Rob were waiting at the
bivouac for the service team. Ian greeted them with the formerly choreographed
celebration dance and Rob kept a parking space for them, cleverly worked out
to make the most of shade. They had awoke to 10C that morning but now in their
new 'home' they had 28C to give more impression of their location, rather
than just all the sand! The latest news from the bivouac is that Ian and Rob's
car is 100%, AOK and 'well-sorted', not to mention that today, Ian and Rob
are 14th! 14th today and 14th overall! The 15th placed car is an hour behind
them but the 10th placed car is only 10minutes ahead of them! What will they
achieve tomorrow?! Now a footnote: Word may have got out that Ian and Rob
are being beaten, and have in fact been physically overtaken on occasion by,
well, a charming young driver, who happens to be very petite, blond and female.
Much attention seems to be being paid to this matter. In fact has it gone
completely unnoticed that Ian and Rob are the leading Wildcat pair? Well,
John Goldie decided to make some investigations to the former matter, diligently
providing the service Ian and Rob's fans are most interested in. He would
like to emphasise that Ian and Rob are the leading Wildcat pair but in order
to satisfy other interests he has managed to obtain evidence of the point
of interest. It will be posted on the photo-album in the form of a picture
of car 218 overtaking car 242. Car 218 happens to be piloted by a charming
young driver, who happens to be very petit, blond and female. Ian and Rob
dismiss this issue and focus on conversations about arm-wrestling, beer-drinking
and V8 raw power. John Goldie has focused his attention to amassing many more
pictures of Ian and Rob in action on stage. They'll be posted on the photo-album
too."

Subject: Friday's Report
Here's the report from today! " Yesterday had seemed to good to be true
with only a puncture needing attending to. By lunchtime the service team had
Ian's Wildcat fueled, washed and parked, standing proud by the service truck
in the centre of the service area, with Mitsibushi, Volkswagen and Nissan
France by them, all still working away frantically. John Goldie took the opportunity
to give the service truck a thorough inspection and repaired an electrical
fault in the workshop bay to allow power drill's to be charged. He had already
neatly created a 12volt feed to an in-cab 'lighter-socket' to help make sure
a lot of the I.T. and sat-phone technology could be used conveniently. Meanwhile
the whole crew was repeatedly approaced by different individuals and team
members asking for items to borrow, items to buy, or help to be given! Other
than that they were able to simply enjoy the fabulous place that 'El Borma'
is to visit and stay at. Ian and Rob went to bed early to maximise their rest
before the next stage. Chris and both Johns had a late evening drink sat up
on top of the service truck, feeling a great sense of satisfaction and enjoying
more time to catch up with each other and 'set the world straight'. Later
on both Johns went up the dunes, taking themselves away from the sight and
sound of the bivouac and into a magical atmosphere. The sky was completely
clear, the moon was lighting their way and they marvelled at the sight and
texture of all the waves, mounds and bowls of sand all around them. The temperature
had already dropped when the sun went down and through the night it fell even
further causing heavy due to soak their tents by the morning. During the day
the service truck managed to see Ian and Rob leave the start, come through
C.P.4 and arrive at the finish. This time they made it all the way through
the stage (with monumental dune sections) without getting stuck once or having
so much as a puncture. Again it was too good to be true. Indeed it was, the
day didn't go without a hitch, the race organisers found fault with Ian and
Rob's clothing on the start line. They were allowed to race but Ian and Rob
and the service team are now a little wary of what might follow. So far there
has been no follow-up but it is likely to amount to no more than something
that just needs to be sorted out. Commenting to his wife on the day's experience
Ian Rochelle spoke of how unbelieveable it was where his car managed to go
- over what were in effect mountains made from sand. Both Ian and Rob totally
loved the stage, it was fantastic preparation for the likes of the Dakar Rally
and they thrived on it today. They were 15th today and now lie 15th overall."

Its great to here that all is going well and nothing is having to be done
to the car, get your crew working then by having waiter service in Bivouac
and never wanting for beer. John was the best at theiving beer last year so
I suggest you check his pockets(In bivouac it is meant to be 1 can with your
meal only) Now you have mastered the dunes, keep up the damage free driving
and aim for the finish you want and make sure that you all keep enjoying the

Johns Report! Here it is: "Overnight the weather provided an even bigger
surprise than yesterday's temperature drop in the form of rain! Those not
able to sleep through the perpetual sound of generators and revving engines
found themselves listening to the sound of rainfall on their tents and got
up to a scene of 'claggy-sand' and riders and drivers wondering what was to
come in these new conditions. Further towards El Borma temperatures dropped
as low as 11C and gales force winds tried their best to rearrange the dunes.
John Goldie brought the service team to El Borma early to set up the best
pitched service site. On the way there was a lot of wet sand to cover because
of the combination of rain and wind. Ian and Rob arrived at the El Borma bivouac
19th fastest on the day making them 17th overall! The service team choreographed
a celebration dance for their arrival at the Bivouac! They were keen to enthuse
to them their story of the day. Ian reported: 'We drove the first hard section
with great caution. At the end of that we came around a corner and saw the
start of the dunes. 50m later we were stuck in the sand and realised we still
had another 140km to go! Following the advice of the Bowler Spirit service
manager and Dakar Rally driver Chris Hammond, we let the tires down, locked
the diffs and took all the dunes as Chris had advised us too. From then on
we never got stuck again. During the stage we lost about 10 minutes pulling
another car out, about 5 minutes confirming our location and more time dealing
with a puncture but altogether we cruised through all of it, amazed by the
capability of our Wildcat'. Once again Ian and Rob brought their Wildcat back
to the service team with virtually nothing less than checks needed. Rob had
discovered the combination of dust and rain caused his door catch mechanisim
to get stiff and of course there was one punctured tyre to deal with. By 4pm
all everyone had to do was to get to know other people on the event and plan
a series of ambitions along the lines of 'having a beer on the top of that
big dune' and 'sleeping on top of the service truck'! El Borma lies well away
from mobile phone masts so there will be no communcation until after the rally
moves back towards Gerba. Meanwhile John Goldie is trying to use satelite
technology to get pictures and reports published on the BowlerSpirit forum
and photo album. Watch this space! Remember also to visit http://spaces.msn.com/bowlerspirit2006optic/photos
to see the pictures." That is all from John for today. I try to put the
pictures on line now.

Subject: John's Report
" Yesterday Ian felt like he had hair dryers blowing sand at him while
he suffered in the heat! There was a sudden change in the weather overnight
and temperatures dropped to a very comfortable 20C, remaining that way throughout
the day. Even a few spots of rain were felt at the Bivouac. Fortunately Ian
has enjoyed the food on the event regardless of the weather conditions but
was certainly delighted by the cooler climate today! Today Ian found the stage
rougher/harsher than the previous day's stage. 'It felt like going against
waves when at sea rather than going with them'. This inevitably meant the
stage was also harder on the car. About 80km from the end of the stage, flying
from one jump (in a double yomp) they landed square on all four wheels on
the second and broke the front right hand half shaft. Following that Ian made
sure he did not strain the rear transmission to breaking point to make it
through to the stage finish and the service team. With only rear real drive
they got stuck in sand once but having lifted the wheels back on top of the
sand using the centre jack and with the front diff lock engaged they made
it out. Their finishing position today was 19th making them 20th overall.
Tomorrow sees the first of the dune sections - a new environment for Ian and
Rob, they might expect to get stuck but only because this will be their first
experience of such conditions. It will certainly be a learning experience
for both of them but that's day-to-day motor sport and Ian and Rob are obviously
quick learners - they only entered motor sport this time last year! Chris
Hammond is making light work of servicing the Wildcat, replacing the half
shaft before Ian and Rob had even finished their lunch! John Fish checked
over the whole of the Wildcat while Chris sorted out the transmission. Earlier
he drove the service truck back from the mid-stage assistance point, giving
John Goldie some time to sort out some of the I.T. challenges on the event.
John Goldie hopes to make sure some excellent video footage of Ian, Rob, the
Wildcat and the service truck is taken at El Borma (their destination for
tomorrow) where they will spend two nights camped by an area of dunes. It
is a beautiful sight, famous for the waves of cold and warm air that blow
through the dune areas, enticing you to trek to their tops. Meanwhile John
Goldie is keeping an eye on overall procedings and making sure the service
truck attends to its duties promptly and competently and also making sure
any maintenance issues are covered." PICTURES COMING UP ON

Subject: Well Done
Hey guys, well done on your ranking, I hope that you and the Bowler are handling
the conditions well. The weather has got to be a darn sight better over there
than it is here. We have been looking at the photos that the team have been
taking but I have noticed a lack of "action shots". You know the
ones where you are balanced precariously over a cliff or trying to outrun
the locals with machine guns. Keep up the good work and try not to crash.

Just copy and paste the link above. It will NOT work if you put www. in front
of it, like you would with most addresses. John has also sent me some great
photo's which i will try to put on this website following his instructions.
Bear with me, as I am still at work at the moment! Amanda, you are right.

Subject: Report from John
So far high temperatures and high winds are the prevailing weather conditions
on the rally. The winds have already been powerful enough to try to flip over
one of the organisers aircraft and the temperature maintains 35C until the
onset of night brings it down to a mere 30C. Dust is everywhere - not just
all around but within everything too! Scrambled egg has never been so gritty!
While mere humans struggle in such conditions Ian Rochelle's Bowler Wildcat
has hardly noticed and seems ready to get a higher ranking than 21st. Today
the crew has plenty time to enjoy the scenario, the conversation, sights,
sounds and even a hot power shower care of the service truck. Chris Hammond
in the co-driver's and mechanic's role has been tupically expert with all
navigation and servicing duties but extends his support by making sure 'all
boxes are ticked' each day for Ian and Rob. John Fish has been the most fantastic
companion for Ian, Rob, Chris and John and keeps an eye on everything to make
sure all those 'final touches' are covered. Thus John Goldie always has a
clear windscreen to drive with as hi pilots the service truck onwards. Meanwhile
John is keeping a keen eye on the truck's condition, not being complacent
about how easy an event this is for such a capable truck. He has even repaired
the power supply to the cab's lighter socket to help make his attention to
I.T. in the event more conveniently thouough. I.T. communication is not as
fluent as John would have liked but he is keeping on top of reports and pictures
as well as he can. Tomorrow everyone will finish back at the same Bivouac
but that doesn't mean it is going to be easy by any means!

Hi there Rob and Ian, Richard and i have been having a little look at the
route that you'll be taking and (you may not have noticed this yet) it seems
that you'll be going round in circles in some stages. Now, all you need to
do is to be last to set off, dawdle a bit, then race back to the start and
pretend that you've been all the way round, hey presto, you've won!! What
do you think, will it work? Good luck anyway, we'll be following your progress,
love from Kayt, Richard, Rebekah and Marcus.

They are all looking forward to seeing her again soon.
