John holds Degrees and Diplomas in Mathematics, Education and Special Educational Needs from three universities and has also studied Engineering and Management at two other universities. He is also a qualified soldier in the British army, a qualified and experienced forest harvester operator, a former International Rowing Champion and maintains first aid and mountain leader qualifications.

Outwith his involvement in Rally Raids and expeditions John has devoted most of his time to the development of children with a range of difficulties including Autistic Spectrum Disorders. He uses adventurous activities and challenges that include The Duke of Edinburgh's Award and skiing to help develop childrens' self esteem and confidence. As a registered teacher he develops their mathematical skills by overcoming barriers to learning while he worked as part of the Senior Manager Team in a specialist full-time boarding school that is a registered charity.

John provides and lives in eco-friendly housing on a farm in the Scottish countryside and is currently training to qualify as a ski patroller and instructor to support the local communitys' ski centre.
